How Is Faux Fur Made?

Faux or fake fur is a type of textile fabric made to stimulate genuine animal fur.  It is known as a pile fabric and is usually made of polymeric fibers that are processed, dyed and cut.  The best faux fur is made of fine acrylic fibers because it can be dyed to represent the colors and patterns of real animals.  Faux fur is a really popular material for jackets but it’s also used for many things.  It can be made into women’s lingerie, decorative pillows, rugs, throws and as accents to clothing.

How To Clean Faux Fur

Faux fur can be hand washed or machine washed.  To machine wash, always use a top loader because it lets you control the level of agitation.  Note: you want as little agitation as possible.  Use cold water and fill it to medium level, then add a mild, color safe detergent.  Turn your jacket inside out and let it soak for 15 minutes.  Then, set your washer to drain and spin.  Switch to the rinse cycle and let the washer fill with cold water and drain and spin again.  When the cycle stops, take out your jacket and roll it in a thick towel to absorb excess water.  Shake your jacket to fluff up the fur and hang to dry.

How To Hand Wash Faux Fur

To hand wash, a great place to do it is in your bath tub.  Fill it with 6 inches of cold water or just enough to submerge your item and use a mild detergent for hand washing.  Agitate the water with your hands to create suds before adding your jacket.  After soaking, rinse your jacket in cold water until all the suds are gone.  After that’s done, remove it and roll it in a thick towel.  Then, shake it out to fluff up the fur and hang to dry.
