Potpourri is a subtle mixture of dried flower and plants scented and spiced as a colorful aromatic room freshener. It was originally used in previous centuries to mask bad odors within rooms; elaborate containers and vessels filled with potpourri became the fashion in large houses and halls. Any open container will do, but for it to be aesthetically pleasing, use a decorative bowl or pot.

Potpourri is most usually an assortment of dried flower petals, flower heads, seedpods, leaves, stalk sections, husks, soaked in scented oils and fragrances to create an aromatic mixture with which to scent rooms or cupboards. Usual fragrances are fruit or semi-precious aromas such as vanilla, lavender, rose or sandalwood, although some artificial fragrances such as Fresh Linen are also popular.

Pot Pourri is French for “rotten pot.” Potpourri has been in use for centuries to mask rank odors.  Ancient Egyptians employed dried flowers as a part of the mummification and burial ritual. During the medaeval era, aromatic herbs were thought to repel disease and evil spirits. Scented nosegays were used by the wealthy while walking filthy streets. The Victorians loved  displaying scented matter in decorative vases and bowls. Potpourri is still in use today for the same reasons – both as decoration and fragrant scenting of rooms.
