Small Greenhouse Heaters

Small Greenhouse Heaters… Electric, Propane, Paraffin or Solar?

Small greenhouse heaters are a must for any backyard greenhouse, even more so than they are for the large commercial ones. Because the larger your greenhouse the more options you have to heat it… like building a HUGE compost pile right in the middle of it.

In a hurry?

Now I don’t know about you but with my small backyard greenhouse I don’t have room for a big freaking compost pile in the middle of it. And even if I did I’m not sure I’d want it there anyway.

And passive solar collection, like having 55 gallon drums painted black and full of water to collect the suns heat aren’t always enough on their own or practical depending on the size of your mini greenhouse.

Given how important heating your greenhouse is to your year round gardening success it’s amazing how many hobby greenhouse gardeners fail to get proper heating equipment! Heck many of them don’t even know what their options are.

Once I realized the extent of this problem I went on a mission to find and educate folks about the best small greenhouse heaters available to them. Thus this collection of info.

Greenhouse Heaters Electric

Electric small greenhouse heaters are often just the thing for folks with a hobby greenhouse. They are usually on the small side making them stable on often what are often flimsy or makeshift shelves.

When considering noise and greenhouse heaters electric is quite often the quietest type you can find.

Greenhouse Propane Heaters

One of the nice thing about propane greenhouse heaters vs Kerosene is that it burns clean. Though these units tend to be on the noisy side and MOST need to be vented a greenhouse propane heater will pump out heat much faster than an electric heater.

Also… They also usually cost MUCH less to operate. So even though the up front expense is more for a propane heater it will pay for itself in fuel savings in time.

Greenhouse Heaters Solar

Solar Powerd Greenhouse Heater…

Solar power for your greenhouse seems like a no brainer. And it is usually achieved with a large water filled heat sink. This pool of water is heated during the day and radiates the saved heat back out into the greenhouse at night.

This is why many folks incorporate an aquaponics system right into their small greenhouse from the get-go. Not only will the aquaponics system help keep the greenhouse warm, it will provide humidity and fertilizer for the greenhouse and potentially fish for you to eat as well.

For this reason I have featured an assortment of passive solar water heaters here. Most are designed to heat an above ground swimming pool so with minimal modification should be able to easily keep the heat sink in your greenhouse toasty warm.

Paraffin Greenhouse Heaters

Greenhouse Heaters Paraffin

You’re far more likely to find a paraffin greenhouse heater in Britain then the US and therefore they can be a bit hard to find. But you can usually find one or two here on Ebay.

If this is the kind of small greenhouse heater you prefer to use I suggest you snap them up when you have the chance!

  1. I use an electric 1500 watt oil-filled radiator heater for my primary heating in a 140CF greenhouse. With a fan blowing across the top of the vanes, it does a really good job of keeping the greenhouse warm enough, most of the time. I am currently keeping it at 75 degrees while the outside temperature is in the upper 20s or low 30s. I have a 15amp circuit driving my fans, the space heater, and a small light. I have no more power available. So I’m looking for a tiny propane heater, something that can be left running for the coldest nights. I would like a low setting of no more than 1000 BTUs and a high setting of no more than 4000 BTUs. Do you know of any propane heaters that go down to 1000BTUs?
