Home Staging Tips: Autumn is Just Around the Corner

Autumn is just around the corner, and that means if you are selling your home (or planning to put it on the market soon), it is time to begin thinking about fall décor. As we have discussed frequently, it is important that your home feel neutral so that a prospective buyer can visualize the house as they would decorate it—but at the same time, it is important to provide a comfortable, welcoming vibe. It is a bit of a balancing act, and today we are going to cover several ways to accomplish this goal while getting your home ready for the fall season at the same time.

Use tasteful accents. As always, you don’t want to go overboard with decorations—the goal is always to keep the focus on the features of your home. However, tactfully placed fall decorations can help you do just that. Seasonal fruit, pinecones, and other fall-themed displays work well.

Bring in fall colors. Many people associate autumn with the changing colors of the leaves… and utilizing deep, rich reds and browns can be a great way to bring that feeling into your home. Tablecloths and throw pillows are a great opportunity to infuse these colors.

Compensate for shorter days. As summer turns to fall, the days get shorter. As a result, you won’t have as much natural light when you are showing your home in the afternoons and evenings. Be sure you compensate for this early on, so that you don’t find yourself noticing how dim the home is when you are in the middle of the showing. Let in as much natural light as you can, but also consider lamps and other sources of lighting.

Consider painting your walls in fall colors. Painting your walls can be very helpful, but only if it is done tastefully. Remember that your top priority must be maintaining a neutral feel. Rich, warm shades like light caramel and cream can be perfect—giving off an inviting vibe while still maintaining neutrality.

Make it smell like fall. Few things say fall more clearly than seasonal scents—like cinnamon, apple, and pumpkin. Consider burning scented candles before showing the home. To go the “extra mile”, bake an apple pie or simmer a batch of apple cider on your stove. Don’t forget to offer your visitors a piece of pie or a warm mug of cider!

If you have a fireplace, emphasize it. Your fireplace may not generate much interest in the summer—especially here in Florida. But as the weather turns cool, this will change. In fact, a crackling fire is highly anticipated as winter approaches—so take advantage and highlight the fireplace. Consider rearranging furniture to make the fireplace seem like the center of the room.

Remember, your primary goal when staging your home must be to maintain a neutral feel. So it’s important that all of your fall décor be done tastefully and tactfully. Please get in touch with me today if you would like to learn more!
