Doesn’t "cut" the waste into small bits like other boxes.

Unlike other automatic litter boxes you can use any clumping cat litter you choose but I think this and all automatic litter boxes benefit from using the hardest clumping and lightest litter you can find. This will keep the rake from cutting it into small, unscoopable bits or working so hard it wears the motor out.

Different litters may even require different depths to work best. But once you figure out what works best for you maintenance will be a breeze. Finding the right litter for you may require a bit of trial and error but, in my opinion, it’s well worth the effort to not have to scoop the poop every day.

One of the nice features of the smartscoop litter box ramp is it’s removable. So if your kitty is one that prefers to hop into the litter box you can just get the ramp out of the way. This is also nice for when you have only a small space for your cats litter box. Removing the ramp makes for a much smaller profile.

On the other hand if your kitty has mobility issues it’s a comfort to know the ramp is there to assist them. And Smartscoop ramp can be purchased separately and used on other litterboxes too.

The baggies that line the receptacle are inexpensive and easy to pop in and pull out without coming into contact with the waste. Just tie shut and toss in to the trash.

This is absolutely fabulous for you if you’re pregnant. Because as you know, pregnant women are advised NOT TO TOUCH CAT WASTE!

It’s possible to reuse the green baggies. Simply pull it empty them into regular trash. I have been told that a box of baggies used in this way will last a whole year.

Another option is to use plastic grocery bags in the receptacle. Not a perfect fit and does take some “fussing” to get just right. But it is a free option.

Cleaning your SmartScoop is a breeze too. Everything just “pops” apart unlike the littermaid which you need a screwdriver to take apart for cleaning.

As with all automatic litter boxes, don’t forget to spray the pan and rake after cleaning with your favorite cooking spray.

Pam works fine or SmartScoop has their own brand, too. This really helps keep things from getting stuck and either making a mess or burning out the motor.

Something I’ve found to help with this even more is to wipe the receptacle down with disinfectant wipes or spray it with something like Lysol after emptying.
