What is Ergonomics?

What is Ergonomics About?

Ergonomics is a concept all of you are familiar with since owrking in an office environment became such a key component of our lives. You probably know it has to do with making the office more comfortable but do you know its exact meaning in a scientific sense. Ergonomics consists of two Greek roots: Ergos and Nomos that mean human and law, respectively. In turn, ergonomics means human laws or to be more clear, governed by human needs. Ergonomics is about making your environment, furniture and the room fit the human body rather designing it in a random manner and expect the human body to adapt to it. The most common example of the application of ergonomics is as you would guess the office chair. A non-ergonomic chair would just be a seat that would keep you above ground level in sitting position and at some height to be able to work on a desk. Its contours would not be designed to be in harmony with the human anatomy and instead the expectation would be that your body fits into it. This would have negative effects on your health, motivation and productivity. On the other hand, an ergonomic chair is equipped with height and tilt controls to fit your body and its seat and back support are designed to provide a healthy posture when sitting. In other words, when ergonomics steps in, it is the human body that gets the emphasis rather than the furniture.

Why is Ergonomics Important?

Ergonomics has become a popular concept in the last few
decades and is likely to retain its status in the future. The primary reason
why we are talking about ergonomics much more than we did in the past is
because the adverse effects of poorly shapes office equipment are now much more
widely known than before and nowadays office workers demand more care from
their boss especially when it comes to their health. Especially if you have a
business where you have to employ highly educated and skilled people and make
them sit in front of a computer for hours, it would be very difficult to keep
tham working for you unless you provide with one of the top ergonomic chairs
that will make them feel they are being treated as they deserve. The overall
productivity is also equally important. Today’s businesses depend on efficiency
and specialization much more than they did in the past. Each individual is now
key to the success of the business and the manager must make sure every one in
that office is healthy, comfortable and fit if the business is to make a
difference. This is why businesses are readier than ever to make whetever investment
so that work place is shape from an ergonomics perspective.
