Apples and berries are good as are dried fruit like raisins and they provide free radical control by their content of molecules that act as anti-oxidants.

Aggravated by pollution, smoking habits and age, free radical molecules start out in the normal cellular process as atoms but lose one of a paired set of electrons becoming a free radical and oxidation occurs. The free radical molecules need an anti-oxidant. The anti-oxidant gives up an electron which neutralizes the free radical. The anti-oxidant can do this by redistributing its electrons and still keep stable.

One type of anti-oxidant called anthocyanins is thought to start-up anti-oxidant enzymes (starts-up cell tissue activity) in the stomach. Strawberries are one source of this anti-oxidant and considered a superpower.

“Plant life produces anti-oxidants to fight against predators and UV rays” according to Joe Vinson, Ph.D., a professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Now, what to do about an array of antioxidants as required for life. “You need generals, lieutenants, corporals, privates and others with specific duties. You can’t fight an army with only generals,” says Vinson.

So here to close the gap, try apples, berries and dried fruit on your oatmeal for the best anti-oxidant benefit.

The Food

Flavonoids like vitamin tackle free radical molecules fighting inflammation and cancer. WHO estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without some intervention. Flavonoids are found highest in Red Delicious, Granny Smith and Gala apples that can be sliced and added to hot or cold cereal.

Keep frozen berries in the freezer. The flavonoid benefits will be yours from adding the gambit of berry types including cranberries, strawberries and blueberries to your cereal. They act as anti-oxidants reducing oxidation and inflammation. Like apples, berries possess the compound quercetin amongst other flavonoid types.
