Needlepoint!

What’s the first thing you thought about when you saw the word needlepoint?  Was it something like, “I can’t do that”?  Or maybe it was something like, “how boring”.  Let me suggest to you that needlepoint is something that you can do and it’s not boring. 

How can something so beautiful as the picture to the left be boring?  Yes, this picture of the beautiful Marilyn is a needlepoint.  Yes, you can learn how to do something this beautiful.  Would I recommend it out of the gate?  No more then I would recommend you running a marathon if you haven’t exercised in the last 5 years.  

Like with artwork (and needlepoint is an art form), there are different levels to needlepoint.  Because of that you need to start out small and work your way up.  Consider the following information about needlepoint.

If you are truly a beginner to needlepoint, I will suggest that you start with what’s called a miniature and are only 5 X 5.  Why so small?  There are many reasons that it’s good to start on a project that’s so ‘small’.  

First of all, starting on something small will give you the opportunity to have a feeling of success!  It’s important when you start learning something new, that you have success from the get go.

Also when you start on a small project, you’re not going to feel overwhelmed.  That means that you aren’t going to have thoughts go through your mind like, “what have I gotten myself into”?  

You are not spending your children’s inheritance.  This is important if you are trying something new because you don’t want to spend a lot of money and then find out you don’t like it.  I’ve found that when somethings new and you haven’t spent a lot of resources, you can relax and enjoy what your about to learn and accomplish.  Consequently you will stick with it.

When you decide to stick with needlepoint, you’ll find out that there are all kinds of different stitches and that you can learn how to do.  While you may not know what French or bullion knots are right now, you will be able to learn and grow in your new found craft.  This is how you grow deeper in needlepoint, by learning different stitches.  

Keep in mind, that you don’t want to look at trying to learn them in the beginning.  If you look at doing this, you may begin to feel overwhelmed and believe that you can do.  The more complex the stitch, the longer someones being doing this craft.
